The role of our Trustees

Trustees of Third Sector Dumfries and Galloway (TSDG) provide leadership, strategic direction and strong governance to help the organisation achieve its vision: improving the lives of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged individuals and communities in Dumfries and Galloway through partnership working.

Trustees work collectively as the Board to guide the organisation, support the senior management team and ensure TSDG remains effective, accountable and well-governed.

This in line with our 2024-2027 Prospectus and our Ambitions.

Collective responsibilities

As a Board, trustees are expected to:

  • Bring insight into the changing third sector environment at local, regional and national levels, and consider what this means for TSDG.
  • Support TSDG’s partnership approach by using their networks, contacts and influence.
  • Provide informed perspectives on TSDG’s work, grounded in an understanding of the challenges facing Dumfries and Galloway.
  • Promote high standards of governance and stewardship, helping position TSDG as a leading organisation within the local third sector.
  • Act as a constructive sounding board for the senior management team, while also being the body to which the CEO is accountable.
Trustees

What this means for individual trustees

Each trustee is expected to:

  • Share their experience, knowledge and leadership skills to strengthen TSDG.
  • Develop a good understanding of TSDG’s operating context, including relevant Scottish Government and sector strategies and initiatives.
  • Understand, model and promote TSDG’s culture and values.
  • Provide strategic oversight, direction and validation for TSDG’s vision and strategic plan, and where agreed with the CEO, offer appropriate hands-on support.
  • Act as a visible ambassador and champion for TSDG with partners and stakeholders.

Time commitment

Trustees are expected to commit time to:

  • 4 board meetings per year
  • 2 board development sessions
  • 1 annual general meeting

Trustees are also encouraged to take on one additional formal role, such as serving as an office bearer, acting in a liaison or representative capacity, or joining a short-term sub-committee focused on key issues.
