DG Voice is inviting people in Gatehouse of Fleet and the surrounding area to join us for a free drop-in community event and a hearty bowl of homemade soup as part of Challenge Poverty Week 2025.

As the region’s only Disabled People’s Organisation DG Voice is a membership organisation for disabled people, people with long-term health conditions, their Carers and loved ones.

The event focuses on the impact of poverty on disabled people and people with long-term health conditions.

This inclusive and informal meet-up will feature representatives from Change Mental Health, who will be on hand to talk about effects of poverty on mental wellbeing, and NHS Dumfries and Galloway, who are gathering public input as part of a region-wide review of GP practice services – including the roles of doctors, nurses, receptionists, and support staff.

This event is part of Challenge Poverty Week, a Scotland-wide initiative coordinated by The Poverty Alliance, aiming to raise awareness of poverty and encourage collective action to end it.

People who come along will have the chance to:

Connect with DG Voice and others in the local community
Share their experiences of poverty and healthcare access
Learn about mental health support available locally
Speak directly with NHS representatives involved in redesigning primary care services

Free refreshments will be available, and the venue is fully accessible. No booking is required.

The event is part of Challenge Poverty Week and also highlights the following awareness events:

Monday 6 to Friday 12 is Dyslexia Awareness Week and Challenge Poverty Week.

Friday 10 October is Mental Health Day.

October is ADHD Awareness Month, Global Diversity Month and Intersexuality Awareness Month.

Open to all, especially disabled people or people with long-term health conditions
