The Crawick Multiverse

This Saturday, 21 June, Crawick Multiverse will mark a significant milestone – ten years since it first opened its gates to the public. To celebrate this special anniversary, a full programme of sunrise celebrations, wellbeing activities, and family-friendly entertainment will take place throughout the day.

The site will open from 4am, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience the Summer Solstice at dawn, accompanied by live music from Wendy Stewart and Zoe Bestel. From 8am to 10am, a series of wellbeing sessions including yoga, Tai Chi and Qigong will be held, followed by a falconry display at 10:30am by Elite Falconry, complete with interactive experiences and photo opportunities. Guests are encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy the art land until 6pm. Those with motorhomes and campervans will also have the unique chance to park overnight on Friday 20th June beside two of the site’s key landforms – Andromeda and The Milky Way.

The Crawick Multiverse, located near Sanquhar in Upper Nithsdale, is a 55-acre outdoor art land and visitor attraction designed by the late Charles Jencks. Fittingly, the Summer Solstice also marks his birthday. The site features a network of dramatic landforms, lagoons and open spaces, each inspired by cosmic and astronomical themes. Open from March to November, it is a space that welcomes visitors for everything from walks and family days out to wellbeing retreats and open-air performances at the iconic Sun Amphitheatre. Reflecting on the past decade, Chair of The Crawick Multiverse Trust, Gillian Khosla, emphasised the importance of both legacy and future vision: “We stand on the shoulders of the artist and skilled workers who created and now develop this unique site, which has repurposed a derelict and depleted coal mine into an important asset for Upper Nithsdale. A decade on from opening, now is the time to plan for the next decades to further develop our audiences and increase biodiversity. Our aim is to be sustainable, both environmentally and financially.”
