Governance training

Third Sector Dumfries and Galloway is pleased to share information on our new governance training.

Delivered by our Communities and Sector Support team, our governance training focuses on key aspects of running a third sector organisation like, organisational sustainability, recruiting trustees and holding effective meetings.

Previously, training has been delivered live online, at set times throughout the year. We are trialling a new format for our governance training which will see our existing training topics be delivered completely online, not live.

This will mean that organisations can sign up to undertake the training via our website, doing so through a combination of recorded videos, reflection points, resources and knowledge checkers. The Communities and Sector Support team will engage with organisations booked on throughout the process.

Please note, other training, delivered by our Funding and Communications teams, will remain unchanged at present.

So why are we making this change?

This change is taking place for many reasons, including:

  • To increase the number of organisations benefitting from our training
    • Previous training held on zoom often had low sign up and attendees
  • Make our training more available
    • Training times now not an issue
    • Complete at own pace
  • To support staff capacity

What training do we offer?

Our governance training covers several key topics, including:

  • Recruiting Trustees
  • Understanding your role as an Office Bearer
  • Holding Effective and Engaging Meetings
  • Organisational Sustainability and Succession Planning
  • Effective Business Planning for the Third Sector
  • Financial Management for the Third Sector

Training for these topics will be rolled out in two phases:

Phase One – November 2025

  • Recruiting Trustees
  • Understanding your role as an Office Bearer
  • Holding Effective and Engaging Meetings

In addition to these main training titles, we are also pleased to share four new video resources on:

  • The Scottish Governance Code for the Third Sector
  • What is Governance?
  • The Charities Act
  • The Companies Act

These shorter training resources are designed to support the main training titles and will be accessible on our website without sign up.

Phase 2 – December 2025

  • Organisational Sustainability and Succession Planning
  • Effective Business Planning for the Third Sector
  • Financial Management for the Third Sector

These training titles will be available in December. Exact dates for these will be published here in November.

How to sign up

Below you will find links to each of our training titles that are currently available for you to book and take part in.

Accessibility

All our training videos are provided in video format (YouTube), with each having a voiceover and an accompanying transcript.

The videos are embedded on our website and hosted privately on YouTube which allows viewers to watch full screen and to view with subtitles.

All videos can be paused and played back and viewed unlimited times to ensure you can undertake the training at your own pace and don’t miss anything. However, once you have submitted your form at the end of the training, the training will be marked as complete.

On each page on the TSDG website we have an accessibility panel, please explore this to see if it will improve your training experience.
We are looking to make improvements to the accessibility of our training and will be exploring this over the coming months. In the meantime, if you have any access concerns, please contact info@tsdg.org.uk

Feedback

This move to host our governance training in this digital format is a trial for TSDG, therefore, feedback on it is essential. Once you have signed up to our training and completed it, you will be contacted by a member of the Communities and Sector Support team to see how it went and to request feedback on the format and content of the training.
