The Operations and Development Manager (ODM) plays a critical role in managing, developing, and expanding the services of the Eskdalemuir Community Hub. This position is essential in ensuring the Hub meets the needs of the community, aligns with strategic goals, and remains financially sustainable. The ODM will lead day-to-day operations, manage staff and volunteers, and implement projects that support community growth, resilience, and well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
Operations Management
• Oversee daily operations of the Hub, ensuring a welcoming and accessible environment for community members and visitors.
• Coordinate room hires, manage rotas, and ensure efficient use of resources.
• Maintain effective administrative processes, including data management, record-keeping, and financial oversight in collaboration with the bookkeeper.
• Ensure health, safety, and accessibility standards are met across all Hub facilities.
Community Engagement and Program Development
• Engage actively with the community to understand needs, gather feedback, and encourage participation in Hub activities.
• Develop and expand programs that enhance the social, cultural, and economic well-being of the community, including health and well-being services, arts, and education initiatives.
• Facilitate community meetings to support self-led projects and encourage volunteer participation.
Strategic Development and Planning
• Work with the Board of Trustees to implement UEDG’s strategic plan, aligning daily operations with long-term objectives.
• Lead on new and existing projects, such as community garden expansion, Warm Hub programming, and tourism initiatives.
• Support projects led by colleagues and members of community groups, such as Active Travel, archaeological and historical ventures.
• Identify and assess growth opportunities, including partnerships, funding sources, and community-led projects, to increase Hub offerings.
Staff and Volunteer Management
• Supervise and support Hub staff, including café personnel, assistants, and volunteers, promoting a collaborative work environment.
• Develop and implement volunteer programs to support Hub activities, including recruitment, training, and coordination.
• Encourage professional development and training for staff and volunteers, fostering an inclusive and motivated team.
Financial and Resource Management
• Oversee the Hub’s budget in partnership with the bookkeeper and treasurer, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to meet operational needs.
• Seek and apply for grants, develop funding proposals, and maintain funding relationships to sustain the Hub’s programs and services.
• Manage revenue-generating activities, including the café and special events, to ensure financial sustainability.
Networking and Collaboration
• Build and maintain connections with local and regional organisations, including councils, arts and cultural bodies, and tourism networks.
• Represent UEDG at relevant community and regional events, including board memberships and advisory roles as appropriate.
• Coordinate and communicate with partners to foster collaboration, share best practices, and strengthen community impact.
Person Specification:
Essential
• Proven experience in community development, project management, or a similar role.
• Demonstrated ability in managing teams, coordinating volunteers, and working with diverse community groups.
• Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to balance strategic development with daily operational needs.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to engage effectively with various stakeholders.
• Experience in budget management and securing grant funding.
• Understanding of health, safety, and accessibility regulations.
• Own transport and appropriate licence

• Knowledge of rural community challenges and opportunities, particularly in Scotland.
