The friendships have been long lasting and they still keep in touch today

This story is about Ecclefechan Day Centre’s Golden Girl – Her name is Moira Shearer she has volunteered at the Day Centre for 30 years and is also on our board of trustees.

Moira is 90 years old – she works every Wednesday setting tables, serving lunches, clearing up and has the caring friendly touch to make everyone feel so welcome.

She phones up regular to see if there are any more days as she just loves coming and doing her bit.

When staff or volunteers are on holiday she will sometimes work 3 days a week helping out – this does not phase her at all. We all think she is just marvellous.

She does the raffle at all our functions too which really helps – and all the gathered raffle prizes are kept in her spare room.

Moira was one of the  laundry ladies  who cleaned and sorted out victims’ clothes from the Pan Am 103 flight which came down over Lockerbie on 21st Dec 1988, the friendships also from the American people have been long lasting and still keep in touch today.  Recently there was a theatre production of the Lockerbie air disaster called small acts of Love in Glasgow which Moira went to see, and she met the person who played Moira and got signed copy of the programme.

Moira has made a massive difference having her volunteer and being on our committee as she will speak up at meetings, get things done and help in any way she possibly can. You would think she was 50 not 90!
