Dumfries and Galloway Council shines a spotlight on locals for #VolunteersWeek

Dumfries and Galloway Council is joining the UK-wide celebration of Volunteers’ Week 2025 — dedicated to recognising the power of volunteering and the people who make it happen.

Across the region, over 800 incredible volunteers are helping to power council services — from inspiring young people and supporting local museums to keeping the countryside accessible and communities resilient.

Their collective contribution is worth more than £1.5 million each year — but their real value is priceless.

And there’s even more reason to celebrate: Dumfries and Galloway Council is now officially the first full council in the UK to earn the prestigious Investing in Volunteers (IiV) accreditation — a mark of excellence that proves just how seriously they take supporting and celebrating our volunteers.

Council Leader Gail MacGregor said: “Volunteers’ Week is a valuable opportunity to recognise and thank the many individuals who give their time and energy to support our council services and local communities.

“Our volunteers contribute in countless ways – from helping to deliver major events like Youth Beatz, to leading gentle movement sessions that promote wellbeing, cataloguing archives to safeguard our local heritage and taking part in community clean-ups to enhance the places we live. Each and every one plays an essential role in enriching life across Dumfries and Galloway.”

Throughout the week, the council is sharing inspiring stories, shining a light on standout contributions, and encouraging more residents to get involved. Whether you’ve got an hour a week or a few days a month — your time could make a big difference.
