Being a trustee has made me a more rounded and confident leader

Sleeping Giants Community Development CIC is a community-focused capacity building social enterprise based in Dumfries and Galloway. We provide a range of services and support that strengthen the skills, abilities and confidence of people, community groups and organisations to take effective action and leading roles in the development of their communities.

We have a fantastic group of Board members who give up their time, energy and expertise to help us fulfil our goals. Some of them shared their reasons for being involved with us and our work.

“My experience of joining a board has widened my understanding of third sector organisations and communities. This has developed my leadership as I’ve learned from others with diverse backgrounds and experiences, which has made me a more rounded and confident leader.”
Lynne Mann, Manager, NHS D&G

“Having admired Sleeping Giants from afar for several years, I was delighted to be able to join the board. The experience within the group is very varied – which brings so much to each meeting and interaction we have. I’ve learned about third sector organisations in D&G overall (and beyond) – while getting an understanding of Sleeping Giants’ work at a much deeper level.”
Tigger MacGregor, Company owner

Sleeping Giants’ ethos is one of fighting for the inclusion of those most marginalised by society in decision making processes, which is an issue I am passionate about. Being a trustee creates a great forum for reciprocal exchange of learning and experiences and the development of additional skills, knowledge and understanding. The rewards are immense in terms of skills development, learning opportunities and that great and tangible feeling of making a difference.

I would recommend this volunteer role to any individual; it is a significant commitment but extremely rewarding to help shape the strategic direction of a third sector organisation in Dumfries and Galloway.

Linda Dorward, Councillor, D&G Council

“Living in a rural area I recognise that support is needed to provide strength and give confidence to build the skills, abilities and confidence of people and groups to take action in their communities. I have financial experience stretching back over 34 years and I use this to support Sleeping Giants with their financial accounts, budgets and cash flow projections. Budgets are a moveable feast and need constant monitoring, failing to plan means planning to fail.”
