New sessions aim to break down barriers to volunteering in region

Third Sector Dumfries and Galloway (TSDG) is launching a series of discussion sessions designed to hear from local people who want to volunteer but have found it difficult to get started or keep going.

The informal, welcoming events are open to anyone who has faced challenges around volunteering, whether that’s due to time, transport, health, confidence, caring responsibilities, finances, accessibility, or any other barrier.

No previous volunteering experience is required to attend.

The sessions are in Dumfries, Annan, Stranraer and online for those unable to attend in-person. People interested in attending can visit https://www.tsdg.org.uk/events/ to see the full list of sessions and book the one that suits them best.

The sessions form part of TSDG’s wider work to better understand the real-life obstacles that prevent people across the region from volunteering, with the aim of shaping more accessible and inclusive opportunities and support in future.

The relaxed and supportive environment will feature small group discussions and opportunities to share ideas and experiences.

TSDG is looking for:

  • People who would like to volunteer but have faced barriers to doing so
  • Former volunteers who have found it difficult to continue
  • Anyone with lived experience they would like to share
  • Current volunteers who would like to help shape future support for volunteers

A spokesperson said: “We know that so many people want to get involved in their communities but face real, practical barriers to doing so. These sessions are about listening and using what we hear to start to help make volunteering genuinely accessible for everyone in Dumfries and Galloway.”
